Everything You Need To Know About Heat Pump Water Heaters
You may not know much about Heat Pump Water Heaters, most US homeowners will be familiar with heat pumps. They are the heart of most HVAC systems and can cool and heat households effortlessly.
Heat pumps mainly associated with HVAC systems, another type known as a Heat Pump Water Heater or HPWH for short.
They offer an alternative to gas heating and other methods to heat water. Also, increasingly becoming popular as a water-heating system. HPWS are becoming more cost-effective systems for your energy bill.
How Do Heat Pumps Work?
Heat pumps use a method of moving heat from one place to another to either heat or cool the air or, in this case, the water.
Traditional water heating systems use combustion or electricity to heat water directly. However, with HPWH systems, heat is pulled from the surrounding air and transferred to water at a higher temperature.
To do this, heat pumps require electricity, but because it is moving heat and not directly generating heat, it uses much less power and energy than other heating systems.
Types of Heat Pump Water Heaters
You can choose from the following types of HPWH systems
- Standalone - This HPWH is only set up to heat water and has nothing to do with your HVAC system.
- Combination: This is when an HPWH is a part of an HVAC system capable of heating water AND heating and cooling air in the home.
- Retrofitted: If you already have an existing conventional storage water heater, you can retrofit an HPWH system.
- Integrated Unit: You can also purchase and install a completely standalone HPWH system with a built-in water storage tank and backup resistance heating elements.
- Water-to-water heat pump - This system pulls heat from water instead of air, which is then transferred to the water that needs to be heated.
